Water Quality Laboratory

Supporting education, research, and testing in water and wastewater quality.

Laboratory Overview

The Water Quality Laboratory (Laboratorium Kualitas Air, LKA) is part of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Institut Teknologi Bandung. Located at Ganesa Campus, it supports water and environmental-quality analysis for education, research, and services to external partners and the public.

Its origins trace to the Laboratorium Voor Technische Hygiene en Assaineering, established on 19 March 1935. The laboratory was transferred to ITB in 1966 and developed alongside Sanitary Engineering, now Environmental Engineering.

The laboratory supports the university’s three missions through student practical work, research by students and academic staff, and community services including sampling, testing, consultation, and training.

History & Development

Established in 1935

Founded on 19 March as the Laboratorium Voor Technische Hygiene en Assaineering under the Dutch administration.

Transferred to ITB in 1966

Transferred through a joint decree of the Minister of Health and the Minister of Higher Education and Science.

Supporting Environmental Engineering

The laboratory developed its education and research role alongside the Sanitary Engineering department, established in 1962 and later renamed Environmental Engineering.

Quality Development Since 2003

The laboratory’s history records KAN accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 from 2003 as part of its commitment to testing quality.

Its development supports water and wastewater studies alongside the Environmental Engineering research groups.

Testing & Community Services

Services support government agencies, private companies, universities, and the wider community through water and wastewater sampling, sample testing, quality consultation, and training from sampling to laboratory analysis.

The documented testing matrices include water for hygiene and sanitation, drinking water, domestic and industrial wastewater, well water, lakes, rivers, estuaries, swamps, ponds, reservoirs, and seawater.

Physical Parameters

Temperature, turbidity, colour, suspended solids (TSS), and dissolved solids (TDS).

Chemical Parameters

pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), BOD, COD, nutrients including nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and phosphate, and metals.

Microbiological Parameters

Total coliform, faecal coliform, and indicator microorganisms.

Water & Wastewater Characterisation

Quality characterisation of domestic and industrial wastewater, surface water, and groundwater.
