Air & Waste Management
Research and collaboration in air quality, solid and hazardous waste, and environmental management technologies.
Research Group Overview
The Air & Waste Management Research Group (Pengelolaan Udara dan Limbah, PUL) was established in January 2006 during ITB’s organisational transformation, when the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Planning (FTSP) became the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FTSL). It is one of the three research groups originating from the former Department of Environmental Engineering.
PUL brings together expertise in solid-waste management technologies and air-pollution control, combining education, research, and professional practice. Its work is closely supported by the Solid & Hazardous Waste Laboratory and the Air Quality Laboratory.
Members hold postgraduate qualifications from universities in France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria, Australia, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia. Their experience spans teaching, research, and professional work in air quality and waste management.
Research Areas & Laboratories
PUL is organised into two subgroups, supported by laboratories serving education, research, and professional activities.
Air Quality Management
Air-quality monitoring and modelling, emission inventories, air-pollution control, and climate-related research.
Air Quality Laboratory →Solid & Hazardous Waste Management
Solid and hazardous waste management and technology, thermal processes, waste disposal, microplastics, waste valuation, and landfill mining.
Solid & Hazardous Waste Laboratory →Research Project Examples
Examples of research topics documented by the group cover air quality and solid and hazardous waste management.
Air Quality Management
- Air-pollution monitoring and modelling.
- Emission inventories.
- Forest and peatland fires.
- Air-quality valuation and global climate change.
- FGD, low-cost sensors, and source apportionment.
Solid & Hazardous Waste Management
- Thermal treatment processes and waste disposal.
- Solid and hazardous waste management.
- Microplastics.
- Waste valuation.
- Landfill mining.
Collaboration & Policy Contributions
PUL members have participated in competitive research and international cooperation through the Toyota Clean Air Project (TCAP), GCRF, UKRI, WRI, SIDA, CIDA, GIZ, Euro-Asia Link, ICLEI, NASA, NUS–US Navy, and collaboration with Indonesia’s transport authorities.
Together with other research groups, PUL contributed to establishing an ITB climate-change research centre. Its research has also received support through Hibah Bersaing, RUT, Voucher, IPTEK, internal ITB grants, LPDP, and other Dikti schemes.
Members contribute to guidelines, manuals, standards, and regulations concerning solid waste, hazardous waste, and air quality. The group’s documented contributions include preparation of Law No. 18 of 2008 on Waste Management, work on an air-quality management bill beginning in 2006, and a mining-related ministerial regulation in 2014.
Government & Research Institutions
Documented research partners include the Ministry of Public Works, its human-settlements research unit, BPPT, the Ministry of Environment, the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Bappenas, LPDP, the Ministry of Industry, and state-owned enterprises.
Industry & Applied Research
Documented collaborators include Chevron, Freeport, Vale Indonesia, Krakatau Steel, Kaltim Prima Coal, Indocement, coal-fired power plants, Aneka Tambang, Total Indonesie, Central Java Power, ICA, Fortum, paper industries, Toyota Motor Corporation, Vital Strategy, textile industries, and other research institutions.
