Environmental Management Technology
Environmental management, health, and technology research responding to challenges in tropical regions.
Research Group Overview
The Environmental Management Technology Research Group (Teknologi Pengelolaan Lingkungan, TPL), also described as Environmental Management and Technology (EMT), was established in 2006 through the merger of the Environmental Management and Environmental Health groups.
Its vision is to become a world-leading institution in environmental management and technology, particularly for tropical countries. Its mission is to contribute to environmental engineering and management through high-quality, innovative education, excellent research, and intensive community engagement.
The group responds to global and local environmental challenges in ways suited to the resources available in tropical countries. It welcomes collaboration with institutions worldwide to support a prosperous Indonesia through sustainable development.
Research Scope
TPL’s knowledge base evolves with environmental problems, societal change, and advances in science and technology. Its scope encompasses two main aspects: quality management systems and human responses.
Environmental Systems & Resources
Global issues such as energy and climate change are considered in relation to local environments and communities, the development of environmental infrastructure, natural-resource and energy consumption, and pollution from human activities.
Environmental Health & Risk
The group’s scope includes developments in environmental-health risk assessment and the ways people and communities respond to environmental change.
Research Project Examples
Examples of research projects documented by the group span water systems, environmental health, sanitation, risk, and occupational safety.
Research Projects
- Stochastic discrete Markov modelling of Jatigede Reservoir to meet downstream raw-water demand.
- Parameters for eliminating parasitic worm eggs when wastewater treatment and faecal sludge treatment sludge is used as fertiliser.
- Assessment of sanitation vulnerability in the Indigenous community of Kasepuhan Ciptagelar.
- Development of a water-quality data management system to improve environmental health.
- Identification of pollutants in non-utility clean-water sources in the Upper Citarum watershed for public-health risk assessment.
- Identification of pollutants and their health effects on batik workers, and workplace environmental management towards healthy batik villages.
- Mapping the environmental and public-health impacts of mercury around mining locations.
- Water security, sustainability, resilience, and safety.
Further Research Projects
- Sociotechnological solutions to water-resilience challenges in urban and post-disaster settings.
- Quality of reused water in the water–food nexus to support water and food security.
- Determination of a water-resource vulnerability index for climate variability in the Upper Citarum watershed, West Java.
- Potential for planned and unplanned domestic wastewater reuse to reduce pollution loads and improve urban wastewater management.
- Assessment of river-water quality as a water resource using biological methods.
- Discrete Markov modelling of water quantity and quality for hydropower utilisation at Saguling Reservoir.
- Analysis and evaluation of industrial workplace accidents to improve productivity and occupational safety.
