The Environmental Engineering postgraduate programs at ITB’s Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering organised an outbound student exchange to the School of Environment at Nanjing University (NJU), China, to support the internationalisation of higher education and ITB’s World Class University vision.
Held from 28 June to 10 July 2026, the exchange was funded through PROGRAM EQUITY (Enhancing Quality Education for International University Impacts and Recognition). It aimed to strengthen research collaboration, develop students’ research capabilities, and expand international academic partnerships.
The ITB delegation comprised Prof. Agus Jatnika Effendi and Dr. Anindrya Nastiti, together with doctoral student Ghefra Rizkan Gaffara and master’s student I Kadek Bagus Adi Kusuma.
Addressing Environmental Challenges Together
The source article describes NJU’s School of Environment as a major environmental research centre in Asia, with strengths in water quality management, pollution control technology, environmental remote sensing, and risk and sustainability modelling.
The exchange also supported capacity building in environmental science and technology in connection with the Sustainable Development Goals:
- SDG 4: Quality Education
- SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
- SDG 13: Climate Action
- SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Academic Collaboration and Laboratory Research
The exchange involved two main phases:
- Academic and institutional collaboration: ITB faculty and NJU researchers took part in guest lectures, scientific discussions, facility visits, and the identification of research opportunities. These activities laid the groundwork for a longer-term partnership, including exploration of an institutional Memorandum of Understanding.
- Research internship and laboratory practice: participating students undertook laboratory research under the supervision of NJU School of Environment researchers. They explored advanced methodologies, analysed data, and presented their work to NJU academics.
Through this exchange, ITB reaffirmed its commitment to developing innovative graduates with international research experience and the ability to address complex environmental challenges.
